Is It Possible Not to Have a Physical Addiction to Drugs?

Question by Boy: Is it possible not to have a physical addiction to drugs?
As far as I know, the vasopressin receptor gene could be involved in human drug addiction. If this gene were to be mutated to a point where is does not function as it should, does that mean some people may not be able to become physically addicted to drugs like nicotine or alcohol?

Theoretically, but then you’d have other problems because vasopressin has other functions as well. You’d have a lot of trouble maintaining homeostasis without it, which is partially how drug addiction works: your body has altered its definition of homeostasis to require the drug in question.
